Ranitidine (brand name: Zantac) is used to treat and prevent the recurrence of ulcers and to treat other conditions where the stomach makes too much acid. Ranitidine also is used to treat or prevent occasional heartburn, acid indigestion, or sour stomach. It decreases the amount of acid made in the stomach. Ranitidine is available with and without a prescription.

Zantac, Generic Zantac, Ranitidine is in a class of drugs called histamine receptor antagonists. Ranitidine works by decreasing the amount of acid the stomach produces. Zantac, Generic Zantac, Ranitidine is used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines. Zantac, Generic Zantac, Ranitidine is also used to treat conditions in which the stomach produces too much acid and conditions in which acid comes up into the esophagus and causes heartburn, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Zantac, Generic Zantac, Ranitidine may also be used for conditions other than those listed in this medication guide. Do not stop taking Zantac, Generic Zantac, Ranitidine without first talking to your doctor. It may take up to 8 weeks for an ulcer to heal.
